NOTES
In 1839 soon after he was pardoned William travelled to the new Colony of Melbourne, and in 1841 was listed as a Police constable.
Bridget Gorman (1818-1870) was born in Thurles, Tipperary and arrived in Melbourne in 1841 with her sister Alice Gorman and Alice's husband Martin Morgan. Bridget soon caught the eye of William who quickly proposed marriage, backed out of the marriage, was sued for Breach of Promise and found guilty, this was the first Breach of Promise action in the colony and Bridget was represented by Redmond Barry who was later to become a prominent figure in the Judicial System in Victoria. In 1842 William married Bridget who two days later gave birth to twins, the surviving twin was Mary Ann ONeil who married James McCormack in 1860.
Bridget during an eventful life had nine children to William who was a very colourful character who during his lifetime had:-
- been involved in a duel
-challenged another person to a duel
-been held up by two robbers
-owned Horseshoe Bend at Keilor, Melbourne, Victoria
-been involved in many legal actions
-sat on various juries around Keilor
-been involved in land dealings too numerous to relate,
After the death of Bridget Gorman in 1870, when he was 63 years of age, he married his third wife 15 year old Elizabeth Perry who left him after three months. William divorced her 17 days before he died of typhoid in a South Melbourne hotel.
For more details of their life and marriage refer to Keilor Pioneers - "Dead Men Do Tell Tales" by Angela Evans.
